Simplicity is the name of the game when it comes to interior design, says design and interior designer John J. Sullivan.
Here are 10 ways to do that.

Here’s how they do it:1.
Design with a minimalist aesthetic2.
Make it look like you live in your own space3.
Make sure it’s not a big box4.
Consider using a minimalistic palette for everything else, such as furniture and decorThe minimalist aesthetic can be applied to almost any space, Sullivan explains.
The idea is to have your home as an extension of yourself rather than something that is constantly going on around you.
It’s a concept that has helped Sullivan build his reputation as a minimalist architect.
“When we think about the minimalist aesthetic, we’re looking for something simple, clean, and elegant.
It can be a small space with minimal decoration, but also a large room, or a home that is not necessarily big but is really small,” Sullivan explains, adding that there is no right or wrong way to be minimalist.
The best way to do this is to go minimalist.
“I’ve done it before and I’ll do it again.
But the thing is, it’s really not so hard.
You can do it, you just have to be conscious about it.”
The minimalist home Sullivan is talking about is the one he created in his hometown of Washington, D.C., a city that has a long history of the practice of minimalist living.
Sullivan, who grew up in D.O.C. and attended Georgetown University, moved to Washington in 1999, settling in a neighborhood where there is an abundance of outdoor spaces and natural light.
“In the city, people were so happy to have a walk-in closet in their front yard, or have a closet in the backyard,” Sullivan says.
“There were so many small, natural spaces in the neighborhood, so that gave me an idea for this place.”
In addition to the kitchen, Sullivan has installed a minimalist bathroom, a bedroom and a living room in his home, complete with an in-home laundry and a separate bedroom for his dog.
He’s even created a storage space in the living room for books, and he keeps the house’s furniture, such in-law furniture, in a closet.
“It’s a very minimalistic style,” Sullivan notes.
“I’ve always liked to think of my home as a minimal space.
I just love to do things that are simple.”
Sullivan also likes to take time to consider the space and its relationship to the outside world.
“Sometimes, I just need to be at home,” Sullivan adds.
“And so I like to think about what the space does and how it interacts with the world around it.
I can imagine what the outside might be like.”
